I got it - I hope! What a gawdawful location in the engine compartment in which to work.
The hose clamp was NOT loose. This terrified me because I immediately thought the lower hose had torn on the engine side of the clamp and shifted. Where would I get a new MacKay Hose Set now?
No, the hose clamp was tight on the rubber bushing the metal tube passes through on its way into the passenger compartment. The obvious answer is that I had mis-positioned the clamp when I installed the hose set 5+ years ago, and the lower hose had never been securely fastened. Eventually as it aged it moved enough, or grew enough, or likely both, that it began to weep.
I guess this explains why I have received a low coolant message once or twice each year for the past few years. I was never concerned with that low frequency and only became concerned when it became once per week.
Oh well, it is fixed now - I hope!
