That retaining clip is deceptively tricky to get back in; it’s on the underside and really easy to drop. I was glad I had both the new one and the old one I removed as I dropped one.
Ultimately I found it easiest to loosen the two 10mm bolts that mount the pump itself and gave me more leeway to move things around. If I recall correctly I had to remove the headlight assembly (easy on an 03) and pop the small grill insert out.
That spring tension is heavy. While the tube doesn’t retract completely, it doesn’t stick far enough out to attach the nozzle from outside and get the clip on. Being able to move the pump assembly out the hole was the trick for me.
Good luck.
