Changing Alternator is a Pain Posted by FredKolb12 [Email] (#46) [Profile/Gallery] (more from FredKolb12) on Thu, 20 Jan 2022 04:46:46 In Reply to: Re: Saab woes - alternator??, Peter N, Wed, 19 Jan 2022 17:12:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
On a V6, the procedure per the WIS is to remove the right front axle to get it out; however, there is a way to do it (still with difficulty) without pulling the axle. On a 4 cylinder, there is a lot more room between the firewall and engine to get the alternator out per most of the postings I've seen. In both cases, the engine support frames have to be removed and the engine supported with a jack.
When my MY2000's alternator went, I was able to change it in the driveway (in a composite 3 or 3.5 hours of labor) without pulling the axle, but the alternator had to be turned just right to get it through the tight space behind the engine. The bolts securing it go in different directions. The top bolt goes from fender toward the engine and the bottom from engine side out toward the fender (from under the car).
Good luck.
