You don't mention how many miles and what service history you do have.
I have an '02 ARC wagon w/ 190K on the clock and love it.
1st: Timing Belt ok? change every 70k
Thermostat and pump at the same time is VERY cheap insurance.
Change the oil at 5k
I redid my subframe bushings at 170K and MAN what a dif in ride and handling. I did the steering bushes at the same time since I was into it.
I seemed to have a little pokey get up and go and the occasional blue smoke on ignition so I ventured into replacing my turbo. That's the saga I'm into now, busted a manifold bolt so had to remove the head which has lead to.... well, you can see my post 'Head Removal Advice'.
These are the death threats that are shared across our engine types. Mine being the V6 I don't worry about oil breather back pressure, I'm not sure if that's a concern for you. Others with more 4cyl experience will know better on that.
All the best, have fun and Happy Motoring!
