We were running errands today in our SAAB 9-5 (2002). Car has been perfect for 20 years but today, not so good. We were at around 40 MPH and the transmission made a severely hard shift and the Gear and CEL came on. P0748. So when in Drive, 4th, 3rd with shifter, the transmission was slipping or at least struggling to get the car rolling. I found when in 1st gear with the shifter, it would take off fine. If once rolling at 30MPH and the shifted to another gear, the transmission slammed very hard like it was hurting itself. We got home by starting out in 1st until around 30MPH, then slamming the shifter into Neutral, waiting for RPM t drop down to near idle, and then select Drive. It would still slam but not terribly. When we got Home, I cleared the code, took the car for a drive and made it 2 miles before it failed again. Cleared the code and it came right back.
So I used to have a WIS on my old Computer but lost all my data. Any ideas where to start? We love the car but were quoted $4200 from a Transmission shop to fix it. They seemed to believe it needs a replacement transmission but on what basis?
Any ideas are appreciated.
