Mark:
Here in VA the Airbag system light is a part of the SAFETY inspection required annually. If the light is on all the time, the car will fail. When the car is started, the car checks all systems and reports issues with the dashboard lights.
On a practical note, driving the car with an airbag light on is really not a great idea in my humble opinion. Should you get in an accident, you or a passenger may suffer greater injury depending on which sensor is not working. I recommend getting it fixed ASAP.
On a mechanical view note, the sensor in the 9-5 is near the bottom of the driver (and other doors) just left of the door speaker (driver's door - right on Pax door). The door card needs to come off first (T30 screws in grab handles and at the door latch). The vapor barrier is held in place with a 'removable/reusable' stickum foamy glue. I found that I had to start at the upper left corner and carefully used a razor blade to get it loose - no rushing to preserve the glue and the barrier. This is more a warm weather job as the glue might be harder to work with if cold. Be careful not to mess up the vapor barrier with lots of holes. Two bolts (10mm?) hold it in place (10 mm?) and it has a green connector that points downward to keep water out of the connection that will need a small screwdriver to open the safety tab. There are YouTube videos on disassembly of a door to fix green rollers on the windows - they are worth watching if it's a new repair for you. Also, the car ignition should not be on if working on the airbags and some recommend unhooking the battery.
Good luck.
