Before I decide, I probably would get a second opinion on the head gasket. You could be looking at more than 2 grand if the head is warped. Plus, there'll be some 'while we're in there' things the indy probably will suggest, too.

I went through this on a 9-5 wagon I had bought. Saw some indications of prior overheating, but the car was clean, had low miles, and the price was right, so I took the chance. After driving it for a few months , I noticed the slight smell of burning coolant in the cabin and eventually couldn't take it anymore. Had to get a used cylinder head. Had the oil pan cleaned, too, to be safe, and loo and behold, there were some ball bearings in there. No idea where that came from! Turns out the balance shaft had been disabled, too. Made me question everything I thought I knew about the car's history and prior owners. I ended up selling it after the work was done with full disclosure.

If I had it to do it over, I would still have had the work done, and I try not to regret selling the car! Maybe if it had been a manual . . . . But I am borderline obsessed with Saab and 9-5s, and I really don't want to drive anything newer. I want to keep my 9-5 Aero manual sedan as long as I can, and I just found a beautiful V-6 with only 50k miles. There are some good 9-5s left out there, but it's getting harder and harder to find them. For a Saab person, your wagon sounds like it would be worth keeping, but if you're kid isn't really into it, then moving on probably makes sense.

The other stuff wouldn't bother me. Oil leaks are common on the 4 cylinders. It's usually a nuisance, not a problem. Unfortunately, the climate control system breaks. I'm on my 7th and 8th 9-5s, and everyone of them has needed repairs to the climate control system to varying degrees. Any car is gonna need a new muffler and pipes eventually.
