I have four 9-5s from 2000 to 2009, so I have some experience with these. From your location, first make sure the car is not very rusted before investing in major repairs. A close look at the underside on a lift would be helpful especially the area around the rear wheels. Often rust does not show up just walking around the car until it is very bad. If rust doesn’t look bad, it may be worth investing some money in the car. The old ones aren’t worth a lot except for the safe, comfortable transportation they provide. You might want to do a search here on oil leaks as SWEDECAR has some posts about common leak spots, some of which are not readily fixable. But a serious oil leak always bears looking into. As for the head gasket leak, a look at the oil on the dipstick may be helpful as it should look dark brown but clear, and not like chocolate milk which is a sign of coolant in the oil. The coolant should also look clear with no oil on the surface in the coolant tank. A not uncommon cause of oil leaks is a bad PCV system which can pressurize the crankcase pushing oil out where it would not normally do much more than ooze. People often put a rubber glove over the oil fill hole and start the engine. If the crankcase is under pressure the glove will inflate, while some vacuum in the crankcase will suck the air out of the glove. Your Indy could probably use a gauge for a more accurate test. Replacing the PCV system is not that expensive and may help, especially if it hasn’t been done in a long time or ever. Have your Indy look for where the oil is leaking. Common spots are the oil pressure sensor, the timing chain tensioner, and for big leaks the oil pump o-ring. A look on the lift with the plastic splash guard removed should give some clues. An oil pump o-ring leak can push out oil in a hurry but is usually obvious by the puddle on the ground and oil all over the right front hub and the area behind. It might make sense to make sure it is not one of these other leak areas before doing the head gasket or even at the same time as doing the head gasket. I like these cars and often put more money into them than they are worth, especially if you have one with a history of good maintenance. The few thousand you might spend on your car can’t buy much in the used car market.
