You don't mention the rate of oil loss? I would consider carefully degreasing the engine and then double checking where the oil is leaking from - there are several potential spots, indy might be wrong or overemphasizing this particular one. Could also be if you address the easier to fix oil leaks, the head gasket leak might be less pressing.
With that low mileage on a 2004, which is when Saab cleaned up their act a lot, and the fact you feel comfortable enough to take 800 mile journeys, I would personally likely keep it.
