given the age.. I would suspect the cable as a good bet..

try wiggling them gently near the battery post, and near the starter next time you have a problem...as thats where they tend to start deteriorating...

otherwise.. as the others suggested.. a mechanic should be able to track this down rather quickly by testing for voltage at the starter, etc..
