Hello,
The problem being intermittant actually points to the pipe/check valves. If you were just on the gas even slightly there will not be any engine vacuum produced and possible neutral or positive pressure in the intake. With a faulty checkvalve this pressure or absence of vacuum will be present in the brake booster giving you a hard pedal. Most manual cars do not have the vacuum pump and function fine. It is mostly on the automatic to provide a little extra vacuum especially on cold start. But I know of no remanufacutured pumps. But they rarely fail so a used one would be fine. So you might want to remove the vacuum pipe/check valve assembly and see if you can blow both directions through the check valves. Good Luck, Bernie
