I had a similar brake failure on my automatic 2006 (my manual had a different system). It was a broken vacuum line between the booster and the "throttle body?". I may have inadvertently put pressure on the then old plastic brittle line when I was looking around for a reason i can no longer remember. I was fortunate not to get into a catastrophic accident when it happened since it was sudden and unexpected. The replacement part from the ex-Saab dealer was reassuringly made in Germany and solved the issue but these lines do get brittle with age and should be replaced every ?? years depending on mileage and operating conditions. Mechanics working in the area should be advised to treat the lines with love and extra care. Good to have an extra set on hand if anyone has a "forever 9-5". I sent out a warning post at the time and replaced the lines on my automatic 2005 too. It's obviously important to always have a good working parking i.e. "emergency brake" and to simulate a failure in a deserted parking lot or road for any pilots certified to operate an automatic Saab 9-5 (1999- 2009) which would include brake pumping (may not work sufficiently if vacuum line completely broken, deployment of e-brake, downshifting of automatic, emergency flasher activation and accident avoidance techniques, emergency repairs, etc)
