Hello,
I recently went through something similar in a 2007 9-5 I have with 240,000 miles on it. I do not know if the brake light would go on first or not. But my gauges and lights would all drop off and then come back like the car was just turned on. This went on for atleast 6 months before it would sometimes not start well. Slightly excessive cranking. Just guessing and by mileage I put in the electrical portion of the ignition switch. But the problem remained.
So I had a spare MIU/cluster from a 2006 I had parted out and i installed it. That fixed the problem. It was about a year ago when I did this and the problem has not returned. Not sure if this is your problem or not but it was the experience I had with my car. Good Luck, Bernie
