First of all, buy a 9-5 with the high pressure turbo, four cylinder. They have the best track record.

If it is earlier than '02, replace the positive battery cable (unless the existing one is '16 or newer).

But yeah, I like to fix things when they break, once you've got fresh hoses, belt, thermostat, CPS. Maybe replace the fuel filter ('05 and older) as it is easily accessible and might reduce the strain on your fuel pump. You can leave alternators and water pumps alone - four of the six 9-5s I have still have their originals.

Best advice is, don't let your 9-5 get wet inside.
