Here is what I found out for my 2008 9-5 posted in case others search on this topic.
There are two switches behind the brake pedal that are activated when a rectangular plate attached to the brake pedal arm presses on the switches.
The one on the left is OEM part number 5106141 and seems to be for all years of the OG 9-5 and related to the cruise control system. Stock seems to be somewhat limited, but eSaabparts has it in stock while eEuroparts had it on back order. (As it turns out, I had ordered this part before to keep on hand and had it in my parts box in the garage already.)
The one on the right is part number 32500938 FAE on the Saabparts site but is also labeled as Brake Light Switch (FAE 24510) from Saab Parts North America's eBay store and for OG 9-5 years '04-'09. This switch seems to be specifically for activating brake lights when the pedal is pushed.
When this second one arrives I will be replacing both switches and hopefully that solves the intermittent brake light issues I am getting.
