The check valve is on the fuel pressure line itself (not the pump) with the return line having no check valve, but a similar fitting. It maintains pressure in the fuel line when the engine is shut off so it starts right up the next time. The check valve is not easy to replace because it has a barbed fitting in a hard plastic fuel line. There are different methods for getting that barbed fitting into the hard plastic line and they are discussed here in older posts. There is also a tool made for the purpose but it is around $200. The CPS is pretty much a maintenance item that probably should be changed periodically anyway. It is in a very hot place and the function deteriorates over time. I have read reports that changing it made the car run much better overall but I can’t coroberate that. It can be tested if you have a VOM and that is covered in the WIS. I have experienced different symptoms with a failing CPS, sometimes the engine dying when hot and not restarting until it cools, sometimes long cranking and slow starting, but running fine once started. The CPS malfunctioning when attempting starting will sometimes prevent the fuel pump running, which could look like a bad fuel pump. You will have to proceed based on your judgement of the problem since we know less about what is going on.
