Finally got around to taking a closer look at how my individual speakers were functioning after 23 years.
Front Dash — Right & Left work well, Center is silent
Front Doors — Both working well
Rear Doors — Driver side (L) very faint, Right side, good
Rear shelf subwoofers - very very faint.
I was able to source OEM door and center dash speakers from eBay and a couple of European vendors. The Center Dash was an easy pop-in after gently prying up the grill. The left rear door I was able to swap without fully removing the door panel (I removed the torx screws, and popped faster ears around the bottom edge. That gave me enough clearance to get to the speaker and avoid the brittle window trim)
Rear Deck 6x9s I got JBL GX9628 (6x9, 2 way, 2.3 Ohm) which very straightforward replacements. I McGyvered the wiring, but ordered a Metra 72-6512 harness set that should give a cleaner install while maintaining factory connector on the speaker wire. Just ll have to pay attention to lining up the polarity. Despite them having a tweeter that doesn’t do anything in this application, the grills fit nicely back on and looks like original.
All-in-all, I’m really pleased. Getting the speakers working really has filled in the sound nicely and sounds like it did when new.
