I'm sure. Lower rated tyres usually have a harder compound and last longer. Which is fine if driving is not something that you enjoy. Harder tyes will take most of the fun out of driving. Obviously by his decision to run a wider tyre, he does like for his car to have better handling characteristics. I'm the same way. I run 225's on my Viggen, and would run R-compound tyres every day if I could. I'm on his side of the boat.
Z-rating surpasses the manufacturer's standards (i.e. "meets or exceeds manufacturer's tolerances"). Also, most dealers don't like for individuals to take tyre size changes into their own hands. I have one technician, for example, that won't even work on a car if it has any aftermarket modifications. Some people will only go strictly "by the book". This is great for the manufacturer, but tough for the enthusiasts. I believe that this mentality is a major reason for the large number of brand specific independent shops.
Cheers,
Brian.
