wheels and tyres will not void the factory warranty if they are of the same quality and speed standards. It's not as if he's put on a set of Trueway h-rated tyres with a tread compound with the same consistancy of a rock. This is a Z-rated tyre. 149+ mph. The vehicle is only rated at 149 mph, anyway. A manufacturer cannot void a warranty because an alternate tyre is used IF the tyre meets the speed rating of the car (9-5= 149 mph!). I agree 100% that the tyre is one of the most important parts of the vehicle; he has made a safe decision. A wider stickier tyre! This is 100% okay.
He is not in the wrong; even if the dealer were to go so far as to state that the speedo is incorrect. The Tech II allows the adjustment of the speedometer according to the roll out of the Tyre! This adjustment was made specifically for this purpose! Saab uses aftermarket wheels in the catalogue and endorses several makes of tyres, voiding the warranty would be hypocritical. In other words, his problem lies with the dealer not the manufacturer. Saab would stand behind his decision, even if they don't agree with it from a economic standpoint; they would have to from an ethical (and lawful) standpoint.
His choice is consistant with Saab safety standards and is not a danger. It is a high quality brand with a high speed rating, and is in a size that works on millions of other similar vehicles. I agree that an inexpensive tyre in an H-rating would not be suitable, and would not be allowed on the vehicle (or at least would hold the manufacturer free of liability should something happen that is tyre related). Unfortunately, you cannot refuse to fix an engine problem (for example) because the wrong speed rating is used on the tyres. They are, for the most part, unrelated and cannot be used as an excuse not to repair an individual's vehcicle. This would set a standard that would need to be consistant, even with your best of customers. If an individual can prove that you won't work on his car but you will on someone else's with similar alterations, you will have a discrimination suit on your hands, which is never good for business.
Cheers,
Brian.
