That is a shame, but at least the car sacrificed itself for the well-being of the people on board. Hopefully the insurance company will decline to repair it.
What speed and angle was the impact? I am sure we would all like to hear the details of the incident. The roof damage bothers me a little - that indicates that the cockpit "space frame" deformed. If that is the case, it will be a major fix, will it not?
I was just reading "Saab 9-5: A Personal Story" and it has a lot of interesting info about the crash safety of the car. It indicated that normally the main cabin structure does not start to significantly deform until the front impact speed gets over 40 mph. However, I don't know what is considered "significant". I suspect they mean that you can still open the doors and there is no intrusion into the cabin.
I have ordered a new Aero Wagon - the safety of the car was one of the determining factors in my decision.
Again, my condolences.
