TG,
Let's not dismiss this Saab notification simply because it's been buried! It certainly hasn't been created out of thin air; it's been listed among all the other TSBs on Townsend's site. Tom's taken the trouble to make it available to anyone willing to sift thru everything that's there. It's information is preferred by its status of being created APART FROM the manual. Most manuals are written by writers, not engineers (thank heavens!). Those tech writers get their info distilled to them from the various departments involved in creating the product. It's not SUPPOSED to be an engineering document; it's layman's instructions. When the repair technicians & designing engineers discover variances & corrections to those instructions, they address them thru TSBs.
Driving style, as applied to a turbocharged engine, is moot. You don't decide when to use, or not use, the turbo; it's "on demand" whether you like it or not. This is your own, personal, mini jet turbine! It's an unavoidably harsh environment. Saab recognizes this in their TSB by classifying their turbo engines as "high performance." To stretch the point, would airplane mechanics choose their oil based on flying style? "This plane's always flown 'easy,' so I'll use this minimum-recommendation oil."
Yes, Saab includes the 5W-30 semi-syn as part of their basic, or lowest, recommendation. Their basic octane rating is 87. Their preferred octane rating is 93. Their preferred oil spec is A3/B3. The GF-3 rating is noted "in addition to," & "is approved for use in applicable markets," but not recommended globally like A3/B3. It's an accepted addition when required by certain governing bodies. Also, keep in mind that extensive manuals like this are usually written to cover as many applicable models (& markets) as possible; turbo, NA & diesel are all addressed here.
Obviously, any of these oils we're debating here are far beyond what was available even a few years ago; any of the new specs insure that. I think what's important about this topic is that Saab, or any other manufacturer, has preferences which aren't necessarily made freely available due to various marketing decisions or geographically-dependant political mandates. We need to keep this in mind as the new Saab-US 0W-30 oil hits the Parts Dept's shelves...
