What you say is indeed correct. However, in real life it is not such a simple picture. The dealer can make trouble over a modified car, and it may take lots of phone calls, letters or even the threat of (gasp) legal action to get results. In the meantime your daily ride is gathering dust in the dealership parking lot.
The main problem, as I see it, is that there is so much gray area concerning what might be "directly affected" by increased engine power. Certainly a fried clutch or blown head gasket could be blamed. But how about u-joints? Steering components? The exhaust system? There are a lot of interrelated systems that see added stress due to chipping, and who is to say what caused which to happen? (The AudiWorld S4 Forum has many tales of woe about blown turbos denied warranty repair due to chipping. The poor owners are looking at $5000USD to replace both turbos - that is a major financial hit.)
It amounts to a lot of uncertainty, so that many people would be best off waiting until the warranty period is over before modding their cars.
The real solution is for Saab to offer approved upgrades through its dealer network, so that at least it can have some control over what is going on. Toyota offers supercharger kits and other performance upgrades through TRD. BMW has certain dealers that work with Dinan to modify Bimmers and service these cars - they have clear guidelines that say which company is responsible for warranty claims of which parts. It would be relatively simple for Saab to set up a similar program, and it would basicly eliminate the concerns of most of us interested in modest power gains.
