Hey all of you nitrogen purgers out there!
I found an interesting article that suggests that oxygen's permeability across the tire wall and its inevitable oxidative capacity diminishes the tire's capacity to hold onto the air that it has, ie, as it heats up - some actually escapes - not just a gas law issue (VP = nRT). Sounds interesting. We can now think of tires as jailors of large molecules... sorry, its time for my medication again.

And here is a snippet of the piece:
""Sperberg reports that tires filled with pure nitrogen travel 26 percent farther than the same tires filled with air. According to Verini, this 26 percent increase in tire life occurs because oxygen slowly permeates the rubber of the tire, leaving the nitrogen behind. "As the oxygen leaks out the tire pressure goes down and the tire temperature goes up, which increases oxidation, rolling resistance and tire breakdown. And you usually can't tell with radial tires by looking at them because radials look a little flat when they are fully inflated anyway." Obviously, increasing a tire's life by 26 percent is good idea. And the increased gas mileage from running on properly inflated tires is also a plus. This increase, however, becomes even more cost effective when multiplied by thousands of tires, such as at a tire store, a rent-a-car fleet or a fleet of commercial trucks.""
Cheers,
Eric
