What are you looking for? Performance, luxury, dependability, roominess, safety, all-weather traction? I have a Passat 1.8T (basically a dressed down A4) and just picked up a 95 wagon (base, not Aero). We did look at an A4 Avant before buying the Saab.
Comparisons? The A4 handled tighter than the base 95, but the aero should take up that slack. Still, the Aero is a bigger/heavier car than the A4. The 95 is MUCH roomier, especially in the back seat. It can tow more too. Interior/exterior design/materials - toss up - mainly depends on your taste. 95 does much better in crash tests, though quattro if you have it is more secure than FWD (though again, tires can make up a big factor here). As someone already stated, dealer/service is case-by-case - there's good and bad examples of each (personally, I've got a good Audi dealer nearby - I've given up on VW and take my Passat there for maintenance). Performance - Aero wins hands down unless you compare to the S4 (which is a more fair comparison price-wise anyway). Luxury - Saab has the edge - it's bigger, looks more upscale, has more features, and is more exclusive. Shifter - maybe just me, but I prefer the shifter/clutch in the Audi to the Saab. Probably has to do with the lateral vs longitudinal engine layouts.
Why did I buy the Saab over the A4 - mainly because we needed the room, and the A6 wagon didn't come with manual. Otherwise, taking cost into account, it would have been a tough choice.
As for the other stuff, I don't know. I got a good lease deal in January - Saab paid $2000 cap cost reduction and a low money rate (plus I got a decent deal from the dealer on total price). Don't know if that deal's still good, but with this economy, they could probably use the business.
