First of all, I don't think _any_ extended warranty covers scheduled service costs, so you had better plan on those expenditures. A warranty is NOT a free service policy - it ony covers failures. Also, the gas tank thump fix was essentially a service bulletin, and you would not have had to pay for that either. It wasn't a warranty item as such.
I do not plan on buying an extended warranty for my '01 Aero Wagon, but I do work on my own vehicles. I think that, if you don't turn wrenches, the warranty makes a lot of sense. While parts can be found at discount, you would still have to pay a shop to install them, and labor can add up in a hurry.
Search the archives and you will find many links to aftermarket warranties - do your homework and be sure to understand what you are buying. Check out this link...
BTW, my car has about 20K miles and other than a couple of odds and ends early on, has been rock-solid reliable.
