Wash first - do a really thorough job, as in 110%, since any little bits of residual dirt can scratch during the following steps. Using a pressure washer followed by a hand wash with a sheepskin mitt gets all the grit out of the crannies, like those gaps between the front bumpers and the fender that always fill with road crap.
Dry the car next.
Clay next - gets off the lumpy bits like tar and tree sap. Use lots of Speed Shine or similar detail spray and 100% cotton rags. As an alternative, consider using 3M Adhesive Remover (AKA Bug and Tar Remover). The results are about the same. You can do all the windows at the same time - afterwards they should feel like a baby's butt when wet (the glass, not the butt)...
Polish next - removes the fine scratches and swirl marks. The worse the scratces, the more agressive the polish needed.
Wax - to get that deep shine and protect the clearcoat.
You can't beat Griot's electric random orbital polisher kit for a STUNNING finish with less (not "no") sweat.
My 2 cents. My two year old black Aero has practically NO swirl marks or scratches.
