Be very careful to cut them off nice and straight, and at 90 degrees to the tray. File the edges smooth and sand them a little to remove burrs. I used a table top sander to smooth the edges after hacking off the end. That worked pretty well. Be careful of the finish - it is a rather thin paint that will rub off if you get too aggressive. I ended up having to spray a little gloss black on the end to cover up some scrapes.
I wanted to reuse the little plastic trim piece that goes over the end, so I cut off (using an Exacto knife) the hook and pins that are supposed to engage the appropriate holes in the tray. Then I simply glued it back on with clear silicone sealant. I clamped it in place overnight with a mini C-clamp, and it seems to have stuck on pretty well. I don't think that piece has any real function, but it does make the tray end look finished.
You live in the Seattle area - correct? I am up in Monroe. I have only seen one other 9-5 in my area - a silver SE Wagon driven by a gray haired lady. No bikes on her car!
