If your car is otherwise running well, it probably just needs to be broken in some more. You write that you drive very gently, this is probably contributing to a prolonged break-in... Definitely, you should open it up on the highway (full throttle!)--use sports mode and give it a good workout at least once or twice a week when there's no traffic.
Does your engine ever get a chance to rev above 4,000 rpm?
Engines don't like constant low-speed city driving, this will cause excessive build-up of power-robbing carbon deposits. Give your engine some good workouts over the next couple of months, and then see if you can't manage to get around 30 mpg at a constant 65 mph (select avg fuel economy on the SID and hold down clear to reset it).
Oh and if you haven't changed your oil yet, go ahead and do so now, and put synthetic oil in there.
