You're in NYC?! Are all your trips < 5 miles? That would explain your poor gas mileage! Pages 170-171 in the owner's manual have a nice explanation for increased consumption seen when most trips are <5 miles, especially in cold weather.
Get out of the city and take a long trip down the NJ Turnpike and see if you can't get good gas mileage, I'll bet you do :-)
I'm suggesting using sports mode as a way to exercise your engine, to help in break-in better, and to help it get rid of excessive carbon deposits which may have built up.. but your best mileage won't necessarily be achieved _while_ using sports mode. However, a few here _have_ written that they do manage to get better mileage with sports mode engaged.
You'll have to try that for yourself and see. Doesn't seem to make sense, but while in sports mode, if the engine is able to operate in a more efficient rpm range while accelerating, and if it can attain cruising speed more quickly, this might help to explain the better fuel economy achieved.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't a turbo effectively raise the compression ratio while boosting? And engines are more efficient with higher compression ratios, correct? So if this is true, it would definitely pay off to use a moderate amount of boost while accelerating, as opposed to totally shying away from turbo boost.
