I've had my '99 SE V6 for a year and a half. No engine problems whatever (not that I expect any). I didn't feel the LPT 2.3 had enough power in city driving for me, but have not driven the 185 hp version, only the early 170.
Mileage is better with the 4, and it's a long-proven engine. However, there's no reason to think the 6 won't also perform well in the long run. You do have a timing belt to think of, with Saab picking up the first change at 60k miles.
The good news is there's no bad choice. Buy the 9-5 with the engine you want, and don't give it a second thought.
