Because the torque converter multiplies torque while accelerating, you would probably require less engine rpms while accelerating than you would with a manual trans. So, transmission wear might not be a factor, but I think engine wear might be accelerated a bit with a manual tranny due to this and also because of mis-shifts or improper clutch work with a manual tranny that may lug the engine or impose sudden stress. These wouldn't be seen on an engine with an auto tranny due to the shift logic and energy absorbing fluid coupling of the torque converter in an automatic.
