Hey Jae, welcome back!
Actually, the V1 is very good at detecting instant-on radar, and even laser too. (Although with laser you have less time to react)
How?
Typically, the cop up ahead shoots radar pulses at cars way ahead of you--the V1 sees this and alerts you with a full-strength solid "beep" (X-band) or solid "brap" (K or Ka-band) warning, the "ahead" up arrow, and then silence. This repeats a few times and this is how to "interpret" the presence of instant-on.
The V1 can often see radar 1-2 miles up ahead, so you have plenty of warning, and plenty of time to adjust your speed.
But even if there's no traffic up ahead, cops usually "shoot" the radar gun well in advance, and you often have _just_ enough time to slow down.
Anyhow, most cops usually leave the radar gun fully "on", pointed at traffic. It's so easy. Like shooting fish in a barrel. Practically everybody breaks the speed limit.
Also, it's a bit strange, but cops often won't chase you if they see you slam on your brakes when you see them. Little ego trip for them. So don't be afraid to use your brakes when you see a cop (check your rear-view mirror first of course)
Many years ago, a friend of mine got a ridiculous "58 in a 50" ticket once, and the cop was pissed because my friend didn't tap his brakes as he passed the cop... The cop said, "You saw me and didn't even brake!" My friend figured it was too late to brake, and plus, we weren't going all that fast (and he thought the limit was 55). That's when I learned that many cops actually WANT to see brake lights, and freaked out drivers. My friend was totally nonchalant and this pissed the cop off even more!
Knock on wood, I've never gotten a ticket while using my V1 (I have an old 1998 model). Mike Valentine's last design, while he was still at Cincinnati Microwave, the "Escort DSP", was awesome too. Never got a ticket while using that one, either.
Anyhow, back to the point: a Valentine One is definitely a MUST on long road trips (possibly even short ones), especially in a turbo SAAB! :-)
