I recently completed a 13 hour (straight) road trip with my 7 and 5 year olds. My laptop with the DVD player did the trick. It was a peaceful quiet ride with no yelling and fighting in the back seat. The lap top was positioned in the middle leaning against the from seatbacks, both were able to watch relatively well. Only downside is that it blocks the rear climate control vents.
A $30 power inverter is all you need to make this happen.
