...to the days of yore when Mom and Dad used to drag my brother and I along every year on our Family Pilgrammage back to the Motherland, Holland, MI. 11+ hours from Albany, NY. We'd pile into the Chevy Townsman and make the trip in one shot.
What I remember most about those trips (aside from Mom singing the same 4 songs over and..) were the workbooks/coloring books they picked up for us. Don't know what the series was but they were alot of mathmatics, or geography, or some such. We couldn't get enough of 'em. And if it wasn't that, it was comic books (the Classics mostly). In any case I don't remember my younger brother, an otherwise champion whiner, or myself struggling with the journey.
I frankly have to shudder when I think of all those families who are offering the hypnotic, non-interactive video as a sedative so they can sit back and enjoy the ride in peace. I now have a 10 month old who we've already taken on several multiday road trips and she won't ever watch a video screen in any of my cars, unless it's GPS based. ; )
