Don't worry so much... It's not really a widespread problem and I've never heard it leading to "losing all function and control of a car". (If that were the case then lawyers would be all over Saab).
Some people I know have had DI cassettes last for 150,000 miles... but even if it lasted a fraction of that it's STILL cheaper than the parts involved in a regular tune up (ignition wires, rotor, cap, coils). To make the DI cassette last longer, just make sure the plugs are gapped properly at every major service (10,000 miles) and replaced every 20 to 30K miles.
If the DI cassette is gonna fail it will be at start up when the most stress is involved. Some people have reported a slight burning smell (probably from the leaking DI coils). It has never started a fire or led to any engine damage.
I personally had a DI cassette that would "stutter" at max throttle... This was probably an early warning sign of failure so I took the time to order a replacement, and now I keep the "marginal" DI cassette as an emergency spare.
Plus, the direct ignition cassette is VERY easy to replace. You could change it with a tux on without getting dirty. Loosen four screws, remove one connector, LIFT UP, tighten four screws and one connector, done. Two minutes TOPS.
In brief... Don't worry about it. There are MANY things that can strand ANY car (the main culprit being the battery). This shouldn't scare you away from Saab's many good attributes!
