If I'm not mistaken, the '99 had a recall on the DI, and mine was replaced just before the recall (at ~20K miles). It died as I was pulling out of the driveway. No big deal except it took a week or two to get the part (which I'm told is why they had not yet announced the recall - because the parts were not yet available). However, my dealer gave me a loaner for the entire time so, again, no big deal.
If you're planning high miles, buy a spare. If you're leasing for a couple years, don't worry about it. If you're buying a '99, then make sure the recall has been performed.
This definitely didn't stop me from buying a '02 Aero last year which still almost always makes me smile whenever I drive it.
