Thank you 2Slow,
You helped me in a MAJOR way! I decided to go with my local dealer but only AFTER getting a sweet offer from the guy in Michigan. Someone at Saab of Troy told my brother I could get an Aero for $1,600 down and $473 per month (of course those numbers are based on the lower Michigan sales tax). So I presented that to my guy out here at B&B Saab in Santa Clara and all he wanted was a breakdown of the costs. He never denied a lease incentive but didn't bother to mention it to me before I brought it up with him.
Anyway I called John Foglio in Michigan to get the break down of the out of pocket cost and he told me that because I didn't want an auto tranny or BBS wheels (I just want Silver metallic paint and heated seats) I could lease an Aero for around $1,100 down. He estimated the costs of shipping to California to be anywhere from $500 to $900. So the deal was just getting better every day.
I probably caved too easily but I quickly contacted my guy here in California and told him I was leaning toward buying from Michigan unless he could arrange for me to get an Aero for around $2,000 down and under $480 per month. They worked it out and I'll be signing to lease a 2001 Aero under those terms ($478.75 per month to be exact). Maybe I didn't need to offer to factor in shipping costs while haggling with my guy here but I figure he would have brought it up. So instead of inisiting on $1,100 down, I only went as low as $2,000 in my request since I would be out of pocket that same amount had I bought the car in Michigan.
While it's possible I could have gotten the out of pocket amount lower (B&B Saab in Santa Clara claims to be a volume dealer and therefore is willing to match just about any deal out there)I think I still made out well. I won't stress over the possibility of weaseling them down another few hundred dollars out of pocket when I am getting such a phenomenal car at an amazing price already. The particular car I want (color and options) is on its way from a lot in southern California.
Anyway thanks again 2Slow. The information you provided really convinced me to close the deal. Before I heard about these lease incentives they were offering me $4,800 down and $500 per month, even under the GM buyer program. With the incentives on top of the Gm discount I'm getting an Aero for less than $35,000! Now that is a sweet deal.
If you ever need the services of an antitrust attorney in CA I owe you a huge favor!
