First off, I'm glad everyone is all right. Did you check out your car to see that the clutch interlock works?
Secondly, I am confused about how this incident occurred. I have a manual 9-5, and starting the car without the clutch engaged is impossible. If the clutch sensor were bad, the engine wouldn't be able to turn over the car in any gear. If he managed to get the car in neutral, and the clutch interlock failed, starting the car and putting it in any gear without the clutch engaged would cause the engine to stall. Is it possible that the parking brake was released, and the car was slipped out of reverse (possible without the clutch in) and it simply rolled back?
I'm not sure that this is a design flaw. If your car is up to spec, it's actually a more child proof manual transmission car than most since it must be in reverse to get the key out (can't be rolled back w/o the key). I think car keys in the hands of a 2 year old are dangerous, no matter what kind of car it is. Regardless, you should check it out.
