we don't blink at spending $400 for brakes at 40,000, plugs and points (when cars had that) (called a tune-up) for about the same. By all acounts, this thing generally lasts 35-70000, with an occasional failure much sooner. Unlike brakes, batteries, alternators, which can also leave you stranded, this is a part which anyone who can set a timer on a VCR or change a light bulb can change,, with a torx driver (if not in the tool kit, not more than $5), if you have the part. It seems that failure at low mileage is a very long shot, and there's no reason to replace it routinely, because some go 100,000, according to this board. And no, the new ones are not better, so a recall wouldn't do much. It's a wear item which is warrantied until 50,000 (in a 2003, at least), and after that, its failure cost goes down from .01/mile (.01 is a t 50,000).
When SUV's turn over they don't run any more either.
