I've worked for a few dealers and there is often an adversarial relationship between dealers and manufacturers when it come to warranty work. If an alternator fails that's pretty clear cut and they can examine the failed part when it's sent back. Things like squeeks and rattles are often looked at suspiciously by manufacturers (with some justification) and they may be inclined to not pay for all of the hours a dealer claims or none of them. Mechanics tend to get caught in the middle and uually don't get paid particularly well for these types of jobs. Usually it's the guys with the least seniority (and experience) who get these jobs, or they make everyone take a certain percentage of them. As a consequence, they are likely to put forth a minimal effort, in spite of what they write up on the bill. They know that when it comes to these types of issues, you'll eventially get tired and go away--in about four years or 50,000 miles. This sounds like what's happening to you. As for the problem of black smoke and oil consumption, this is a cronic problem with a number of manufacturers. I know Volkswagon has had a lot of cars using two or three quarts of oil between changes and Mercedes has had the same problem. My brother got a new engine in his MB for the same problem. Personally I think is has to do with the synthetic oil they are all using--a certain percentage of engines just don't get run in properly.
