If you are not mechanically savvy, nor familiar with Saabs, I'd advise you to have it taken to a Saab dealer or Saab specialist for a "pre-purchase" inspection. I may have spent as much as $75 - $100 (or more?) for this in the past, but managed to get the seller to pay for 1/2 of it. The dealer cost estimate for needed work will be costlier, but perhaps a bigger bargaining point with the seller, if they may be less experienced at the car negotiating game. Otherwise, I spent a lot of time reading through this Saabnet bulletin board to find the car's weak points before I bought my '99 9-5 2.3liter 5 speed. Consumer Reports seal of approval was encouraging as well.
I had the definite advantage of the original owner's complete service record history, all service being done by a dealer up to the end of the 3 year warranty. As such, I could see the warranty replacement of the computer module (some internal soldering corrosion problem afflicted the '99 model year). The exterior shell rusting of the rear muffler still remains cosmetic 2 years after purchase, but the seller came down on the price because of my mention of it. The pesky SID pixel disappearances did not occur until after I became the new owner. I've yet to look into this DIY job. Inevitable turbo seal failure occurred at 78,000 miles (65,000 miles at purchase) which I rebuilt myself for $100 in parts (figure $650 for unit exchange and add $500 for labor). Oil leak onto catalytic converter (at 85,000 miles) looks like head gasket ($1,200 dealer shop quote...I'll maybe tackle this in Spring)
All in all, having had 3 Saabs before this (protected in a crash by our '87 900 Turbo), I and my wife find the car to be a nice, safe, fun, and practical luxury vehicle. The turbo accelleration is always fun and the ample trunk space and a "made for Saab" Thule roof rack makes it a hauler as well. Enjoy the one you might purchase and check in with Saabnet for much practical advice and great help.
