I bought a second-hand '99 9-5 sport wagon, 2.3l LPT w/ automatic transmission, several months ago from an independent Saab shop. It had only 37K on it and 6 months left on the factory warranty. There were a few factory recall service bulletins that were not done on the car at time of purchase, the turbo unit was going bad, plus the leather trim on the front door panels were peeling away from the top door lock knob. All of this was repaired/replaced under warranty. After warranty I've had to replace the thermostat. It didn't go bad, just a "check engine" light that came on and had it looked into by the shop. Check with a Saab dealer and see if all the recall/service bulletins have been addressed. You just need the VIN.
I also bought an extended warranty for $1,000 which covers all the possible major headaches for an additional 5 years or 100K. There's only a $50 deductable per repair episode. You may be able to get one for this car, even with the high mileage. Might be a cheap investment in the long run.
I've been driving Saab's for 18 years now: a '74 Sonett III, an '86 base 900 (which I still have, my 17 y/o son drives it daily), and this '99 9-5 wagon. I won't promise that I will never drive another make of car but I'd be hard-pressed to leave Saab. They are well engineered, safe and the fun-factor is out of this world!
