We must have different definitions of reliable. In 48K miles, my 01 9-5 has had the turbo replaced, the throttle body replaced, the DI cassette replaced, and ABS sensor replaced, and the sunroof mechanism replaced. I'm guessing around $3K in work that was covered by warranty. I was inclined to think I might have gotten a lemon, until I visited this site. Clearly, turbo replacements are not uncommon, and DI cassette replacement was described as a rite of Saab initiation. The problem with the sunroof was caught by the dealer before I even noticed it--they very smartly checked it in Spring because it's a common problem and they wanted to fix it before it got stuck in the open position.
What's really struck me is that in three years of ownership, this car has stranded my wife twice on the road (DI cassette and throttle body); two of the other incidents required multiple days of a loaner. By contrast, our 14 year old Volvo 240 with 160K miles has never stranded us (knock on wood).
I've got to say that our dealer (Mike Shaw Saab in Denver) has been really excellent in working through all these problems. I thank God everything--included the loaners--was covered under warranty. But now that the three years is up, I've lost my faith in Saab: despite falling in love with the 9-3 sedan they most recently gave us as a loaner. I leased the vehicle because of the great incentives, intending to pay it off after three years. I'm now incredibly thankful that instead I can simply turn it back into the dealer....
