It's simple to do a quick visual inspection to see if the boots are torn. Drive shafts have a large rubber accordian-like boot near the wheel and a smaller boot near the engine. Turning the wheels to the left or right can make it easier to see under the car. CV joints can fail without the boot tearing, but you know for sure you have a problem if the boot is torn.
