I doubt it will ever "wear out" to the point that it is dangerous to drive.
It is just as solid splines as in a rear wheel driven car with propellar shaft.
Why these two pieces of steering column are moving like that, I don't know.
Why some people have noises and other don't, I don't know either.
It looks like the splines are coated with something, maybe it is the coating that don't interact good enough on the two surfaces.
Volvo uses a plastic coating on the propellar shaft splines for the 700/900 serie, but that is a little bit different setup since the two splined parts are constantly sliding back and forth a little when you drive the car.
The 9-5 steering splines are only suppose to take up the force (collaps) in a crash (at least that's what I think).
The part number has been superseeded for the steering column, don't know if the noise is the reason for the new partnumber.
Haven't found any service bulletins relating to the noise or steering.
The whole steering colum comes as one piece so I can understand if the dealer is hesitant to replace. Some $800.00 just for the part alone.
