As other posters have mentioned, the 9-5 is considered a very safe car and real life statistics have proved it. It's one of the reasons I bought one. TBS, from what I understand from browsing the Saab site, the 9-5 does not have the second generation Saab active head restraints (SAHR), nor side curtains outboard seats, as found in the 9-3. If this is correct, and I wish Mike Lynch or others would confirm, it would explain why the 9-3 slightly outperformed the 9-5 in the front seat dynamic sled test, and why the 9-5 did not get the double 5 stars for frontal and side impact tests. Again, if this is true, I think it's a shame that Saab's flagship does not benefit from the latest safety enhancements found in other vehicles of the brand. In any case, with two children, I believe I would still choose the 9-5 over the 9-3 because of the extra room. Also, I am not sure side curtains are effective for children in baby seats (?) and the first generation SAHR are very good at preventing whiplash, which is not considered a life threatening injury. Hope this helps or calls for more enlightened information.
