Ripped off? No. Fooled? Maybe. But not by dealer. The car manufacturer is to blame (not only Saab) and the customer beleiving in the sales pitch when they buy the car.
Nothing is for free my friend.
Spark plugs is stronger/longer lasting but the main reason is probably to get away with paying too much for the "free" service.
Just like the 15K oil change interval on the new cars (2004 and up I think).
Many car owners just listen to the sale person and forget to check the fine print where it says <under severe driving condition the oil should be replaced at shorter intervals>.
It just sounds so good when they claim that all services are free up to 3 year/36K miles but if the customer drive the car under severe conditions they need to change it more often and that is not included in the "free" service.
I have a 2001 9-3 in right now with sludged up engine and no oil pressure. It has 16K on the odometer and have had 2 oil changes done at the dealer.
To many cold starts and short trips over many years kills the oil.
Who's to blame? Not really the dealer. Customer? Probably, but I feel the responsibility lay on the car manufacturer just as much.
Car owners have been abusing the cars for decades but now suddenly we see an upswing in blown engines in the Saabs and some Volvos and most of them are related to oil sludge problems. Why?
And lastly to answer your question. The Aero with B235R engine have the plugs replaced at 40K interval on 2002.
The regular 4 cyl and V6 is still 30K intervals in 2002.
