are actually pretty good for all four seasons. MXV4's are jokers, but the modern triple-tread designs like the ExtremeContact on my 9-5 are actually better in snow than older Dunlop snow tires that I had with my previous car.
Besides tires, ground clearance is extreme important; in hill climbing, FWD is at inherently much worse off than AWD. These are just a couple factors that make AWD SUV's the vehicle of choice in heavy snow conditions.
