Thanks Frank,
I couldn't get the spacer under the pressure plate splines easily either. Then I started thinking it went between the driven disk and the pressure plate. After wasting all morning messing around with #8 gauge solid copper wire, I went out and spent money ($18) on the "special tool" (a circular piece of wire with ca. 9" diameter and a rectangular cross section) and it made the job alot easier (recommend to purchase it if your dealer has it in stock). I had to use a cold chisel between the throwout bearing and the splines (very gently) to further compress my splines in order to get the special tool in place (maybe my pedal is shot too)! In order to get the special took into the new pressure plate I put a 1.25 lb dumbell steel weight on top of a small hydraulic jack. I used the jack to compress the splines by putting the pressure plate up against a piece of cardboard under the side of the car and jacking it up. The tool popped right into position this way (thanks to Dana for that tip) worked like a charm.

I didn't have to use destructive force in removing the slave cylinder and bearing assembly. I used degreaser inside the clutch housing to clean up accumulated debris and grease that could contaminate the new clutch. After tea it all goes back together.

Being more or less of a novice at clutch jobs ( disassmbled one before and watched someone reassemble it), it took me a days work and somewhere less than $300 in parts and tools. Probably saved around $250 in labor and towing fees. It is possible for a DIY mechanic to do this job, just plan on extra time and keep the kids away (you don't want them to hear some of the things you are going to say along the way...)
