You know, I'm always telling everyone how I love my little MityVac, and I didn't even THINK about using it to drain out the P/S reservoir! What a great idea. You can be sure I'll do that next time I change the fluid. Thanks for making the suggestion -- you'll no doubt save a few people from making an unnecessary mess.

I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with this steering rack and stuff. I'm exceptionally fortunate in that my wife and I have two cars, so if the Beastie is disassembled for a week or so, we're not stranded. That's given me the courage and ability to wade into scary repairs without too much worry... if I didn't finish the job one day, or if I needed an extra part or tool, I could always wash up, relax, and hit it fresh again the next day. No worries about taking my sole means of transport out of commission. Reading your post makes me realize how lucky I am in that regard.

I sincerely hope this all works out eventually for you, 'Roo. Hang in there. We're all pulling for you.
